The dramatic landscape features tropical forests and woodlands, as well as steep, rocky hills with flat grasslands in the valleys below. The combination of the dense sal jungle with the grasslands, as well as a 2 000-year-old fort and 10th century statue of Lord Vishnu, make Bandhavgarh an extraordinary place to visit.
Famous for its sightings of the king of the jungle, Bandhavgarh supports one of the highest densities of tiger in India. The park is also home to a large variety of mammals, from leopard and spotted chital deer to nilgai, wild boar, chinkara, sloth bear, rhesus macaque, grey langur, jungle cat, hyena, porcupine, jackal, fox and wild dog. Bandhavgarh also has abundant birdlife, with more than 150 recorded species. Common sightings include paradise flycatchers, golden and black-headed orioles, purple sunbirds and red-vented bulbuls.

Delivering an authentic jungle experience, Mahua Kothi Jungle Lodge’s 12 kutiyas, or jungle suites, are set deep in bamboo fronds and surround an original Kothi, or homestead, which boasts spacious and welcoming guest areas. Private courtyards with shaded seating and traditional mud floors lead into each of the charming kutiyas. Interiors include wooden shutters, open rafters with roughly hewn wooden beams and roof tiles of handmade pottery. Ensuite bathrooms feature twin hand basins, indoor showers, baths and separate toilets. Eclectic Indian handicrafts create humorous touches and original homestead furniture contributes to the feeling of a personal home. Yoga amenities are provided in a basket, while traditional Indian games of marbles and Chaupad help while away leisure hours. In the early morning, tea, coffee and homemade spice biscuits are set out among aromatic burning incense in the courtyard. Bicycles parked alongside the suite issue an open invitation to explore. Shared guest areas coast high ceiling, terracotta floor tiles, inviting fireplaces and a traditional sitting area with window seats. A vast veranda runs the length of the building, with built-in seats for stargazing. The open kitchen invites guests to watch spices being ground by hand, vegetables chopped using traditional sickles and rotis being prepared.

Just 10 minutes from the Park entrance, Mahua Kothi sprawls invitingly over 16 hectare (40 acre) grounds.
