Watch out for fledgelings as they test their new wings. Meadow flowers begin to dot the grasslands, and as days start to warm, butterflies dance in courtship chases. Hares are more visible as they madly chase rivals defending and winning mates. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOur walks in ancient Dorney are a chance to see and hear Warblers and opportunistic Cuckoo. In the Chilterns (just 25 min from Windsor Castle). Chalk hills resonate to Skylark song and look down on the Thames.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSummer:\u003c\/strong\u003e We take advantage of the long warm days. Water is less common, and so, birds and animals gravitate to water. The backs of Carp carve the surface of the shallowing ponds hidden from most visitors to the park. Bugs are the foundation of the ecosystem, and Windsor is home to 2000 different beetles and many more other insects. Young birds and sub-adult deer are ejected from the family fold, making for some interesting interactions. On Dorney, the numbers of resident waterfowl on the shallow lake and streams swell with other less common waterfowl such as Shelduck. Observing the cattle on the ancient flood plain, with their entourage of starlings against the backdrop of Windsor Castle, is an iconic sight.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLapwings tumble in the sky, distracting Red Kites from predating their newly hatched chicks.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAutumn:\u003c\/strong\u003e Walks may be timed for morning or afternoon (check with us at this time of year). The focus is often on deer at this time of year. This is the time of colour and drama as the Red Deer rut begins, stags bellow and lock antlers in the battle to win females. Trees turn to spectacular yellows, reds and oranges, and on the ground, the fungi displays are outstanding. Redwings and Fieldfares newly arrived from Scandinavia stock up on berries that will carry them through the winter. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWinter\u003c\/strong\u003e: (morning walks only) Frosty morning walks are a dramatic and beautiful way to start the day. Large numbers of jackdaws and crows can be seen. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePheasants and partridge are resident all year but more visible now. Egyptian Geese gather in number. Stags still bellow and scrape the ground with their antlers. Observed while sitting on the roots of a 500-year-old oak would be a sight shared with our ancestors for centuries. The Dorney wetlands are an exciting place.
