Vilanculos

Vilanculos is a coastal resort city in Mozambique's Inhambane Province, roughly 700 kilometers north of Maputo, facing the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park. Most travelers arrive here having heard of the islands offshore, not the town itself: Vilanculos is the mainland gateway that makes them reachable, offering boutique lodges, a working harbor, and direct regional flights that isolated island resorts cannot match on their own. It sits apart from surf-focused Tofo to the south and the remote lodge clusters of the Primeiras e Segundas Archipelago to the north by combining cultural access with quick helicopter or speedboat transfers to barrier reefs and sandbars.

The coastline here is shaped by a macro-tidal swing of up to four meters, which exposes wide sand flats twice daily and governs when boats, kitesurfers, and swimmers can operate. December through March brings heat, heavy rain, and rising cyclone risk, and some island lodges close in February for refurbishment; self-driving in from Maputo is discouraged given the state of the EN1 highway. Most itineraries treat Vilanculos as a four-to-seven-night beach finale after a Kruger or Gorongosa safari, flying in via Johannesburg or Nelspruit. Vilankulo Airport sits two kilometers from town.
