Pontresina, Switzerland
Grand Hotel Kronenhof has stood in Pontresina since 1848, at the point where the Val Roseg opens and the Bernina massif rises. It is a heritage-protected building, and the only 5-star superior hotel in Pontresina. St. Moritz is six kilometres away, which matters for guests who want the Engadin's pace without the town's.
There are 112 rooms and suites, many designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, with interiors that use Engadin materials. The outlook varies by room: mountain, the Roseg glacier, garden or village. The Bellavista wing faces the gardens, with balconies or terraces on many rooms. Several rooms can connect, useful when placing families or groups who want more space. Categories run from Single Classic through Double Premium, Superior and Deluxe to suites.
The hotel has three restaurants, including the Grand Restaurant, and a lounge bar. They differ in atmosphere rather than quality: baroque formality for a festive dinner, something lighter at lunch with the valley in view. Cooking is seasonal with Engadin influences. The spa covers more than 2,000 sqm and includes an indoor pool; there is also a gym.
Families are well served, with a kids' club, a splash pool and baby-sitting. Winter means skiing; summer means long hikes and cycling, with guided tours starting from the doorstep. Wine and gourmet travellers will find the dining a draw in its own right.
Practical points: check-in from 15:00, check-out by 12:00. Staff speak English, German and Italian. Secure parking, room service, laundry service, complimentary Wi-Fi and a conference centre are available. The hotel can be reached by car, train or plane.
