auberge-du-tkrour-262355
Auberge du Tékrour

Built in 1864 by the trader Guillaume Foy, this quayside house belongs to Podor's run of 19th-century comptoirs, raised once the town's Fort had been restored and river trade made safe. Foy dealt chiefly in gum arabic, alongside merchant families such as the Devès, and his house still carries his name. Bought in 2002 by a group of friends of Podor, it was restored with the original materials and colours largely intact: timber ceilings, ochre walls, wooden balconies and shutters brought upriver by sailing boat in the 19th century. Three historic rooms occupy the upper floor of the old block, facing the river, with wood floors and four-poster mosquito nets. Three modern rooms, built more recently in the same style, look onto the Fort or the courtyard. A seventh room, a studio called Terrier Rouge, sleeps up to five people under a steep tiled roof. Downstairs, a library holds more than 1,200 books on African art, travel and geopolitics. There is a shaded courtyard with a jasmine-covered arbour, two small exhibition rooms on local history, and a restaurant. Terraces upstairs face the river and the Fort. It is a compact stay, and one built into a working river town rather than beside it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/6776/2747/files/AHRPTWksGgQRHdUVOp6v86UCyx2YxG6IRkIVY_pXFPOwPUerw445nK6l90BaVs8ky6sE9KXmK-98T2bcKSkDmY9T7EQ_lf10Wv4jq0jXFbOQaO3Z2RplnkopLrkG7K9_FSgF_G7NrA998g_w4800-h4800.jpg?v=1785179430
