backwaters-lodge-eluwankulama-sri-lanka
Backwaters Lodge

The Backwaters Lodge is a set of cabin rooms built from repurposed shipping containers, raised on stilts to canopy height above the Salt River, a tributary of the Kala Oya on the edge of Wilpattu National Park. The idea took shape from a team with roots in tea planting, aiming to open up Wilpattu without adding weight to the forest that surrounds it. Each cabin holds a double bed, air conditioning, hot water, and tea and coffee facilities behind a sliding mesh screen that keeps the room open to the canopy while keeping insects out. A private deck faces the jungle. Purple-faced langurs move through the branches outside, and giant squirrels cross the deck rail. Furniture throughout is built from salvaged pallets and barrels, and light fixtures are made from old glass jars. Solar panels run the property, and a strict no-plastic policy extends to housekeeping and the kitchen. Meals draw on Sri Lankan rice and curry alongside international dishes. Guests can punt down the river by boat, cycle out at dawn through paddy fields, or join a night safari to look for fishing cats and slender lorises along the banks. It is a quiet, low base rather than a hotel in the ordinary sense. Wilpattu itself, gazetted in 1938, is Sri Lanka's oldest and largest national park, its villus drawing storks, elephants and both local crocodile species to the water's edge.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/6776/2747/files/26992359_576561689341787_5842352667353253974_n.jpg?v=1785777820
