The reserve is malaria free, roughly 95 kilometres from Gqeberha, and the camp itself carries no fence. Elephant and buffalo move through at will, audible some nights from the tent decks. Bukela holds 14 rooms in three types: Luxury King Suites, Luxury King or Twin Suites, and Luxury Safari Tents, linked by wooden walkways above the bush. Each has an outdoor shower, a fireplace and a private deck. The tents add electric blankets and a minibar for the colder nights. Rates cover accommodation, meals, house drinks and the two daily drives, morning and afternoon. It is a small operation. A night drive can be added for guests keen to see the reserve after dark, when nightjars and owls take over from the daytime birdlife. The Bukela Spa uses Healing Earth products, free of parabens and synthetic fragrance, for guests who want a still hour between drives. Guides here are Afrikaans, English, Xhosa or Zulu speaking, and the lodge takes guests aged 12 and over.
