caas-castilla-farm-la-cruz-costa-rica
Cañas Castilla Farm

Six cottages sit a short walk from the river at Cañas Castilla, each named for the animal most likely to appear on its terrace: sloth, squirrel, gecko, toucan, golden oriole, iguana. The farm spans 20 hectares of tropical dry forest along the Sapoá River, ten degrees north of the equator, where humidity sits between 70 and 85 percent and old-growth guanacaste and cenizaro trees shade the paths between buildings. Every cottage has a covered terrace reached by its own stairway down to the water, furnished with a hammock and rocking chair. From the Iguana cottage porch you can hear the river running and spider monkeys moving through the canopy. Congos, sloths, foxes, and otters turn up along the banks; birders can log motmots, trogons, and green parrots without leaving the grounds. Two marked trails, white and red, loop through the property with numbered posts keyed to a plant guide kept in each cottage. The Rancho serves breakfast and a home-style dinner, and a small library sits to one side for guests without a screen to hand. It is a quiet, working farm rather than a resort. Beyond the gate, the family arranges horseback rides, snorkelling trips to nearby islands, and day tours across the border into Nicaragua.
