camelthorn-lodge
Camelthorn Lodge

Camelthorn takes its name from the huge old tree at its centre, around which the lodge's eight forest villas are arranged in a stretch of woodland near Ngamo, in the south-eastern reaches of Hwange National Park. It was built on land belonging to the neighbouring community, and most of the staff come from villages nearby. Each villa has a king or twin bed, a fireplace, a mini bar and an outdoor deck reached by a spiral stair. Four have plunge pools upstairs; the rest have them at ground level. It is a compact stay. Less than a kilometre from the lodge, a six-metre underground hide sits below a leadwood tree, disguised as an antheap and angled toward a waterhole. From inside, elephants appear at eye level against the sky, close enough that even inexperienced photographers come away with strong shots. Days run on game drives and walks led by licensed guides, with night drives back at the lodge grounds to watch for nocturnal animals, and lion calls sometimes carry across the estate after dark. Guests can also ride the lodge's own rail car, the Elephant Express, between camps in southern Hwange, or visit a nearby rhino sanctuary on foot with armed trackers. A pop-up spa, staffed by therapists trained from the surrounding villages, rounds out slower afternoons.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/6776/2747/files/38053_2F5._imvelo_safari_lodges_-_camelthorn_lodge_-_arial_view_of_main_lodge.jpg?v=1786526665
