The builders saw an echo of that trio in the volcanic hills rising along the southern shore of Lake Taupo, and the name stuck. Peter and Nina, who took over the lodge in 2017 after careers in Wellington and Auckland's public and technology sectors, run it now with two dogs and a cat kept politely out of the way of allergic guests. The lodge sits in Acacia Bay, built in a Swiss style with glass walls and open rooms that let in the lake light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFour suites make up the property, three on the first floor and one on the ground floor with direct garden access. Each has a private deck and a touchpad system for light, temperature, and music. The Ruapehu King Suite has a spa bath built for two; the Tongariro and Ngauruhoe suites keep deep claw-foot tubs instead. All three upper suites look out toward Lake Taupo and Mount Tauhara. Underfloor heating runs through every room. A cheese and fruit platter, local beer, and a bottle of New Zealand wine are set out on arrival. Dinner runs to two courses with wine, cooked to order with a day's notice, and breakfast is a full country spread each morning.
