drunken-elephant-mara
Drunken Elephant Mara

Riverine forest lines the camp's edge, and at night the sound carries: lions somewhere off in the dark, hippos grunting from the water below. The Drunken Elephant Mara sits inside the Siana Conservancy, a stretch of the Maasai Mara where acacia trees break up wide grass plains. It is a small camp, twelve tented rooms in total, each with its own verandah and en suite bathroom. Family units run to two bedrooms with a shared lounge, useful for groups travelling together. Mornings start early. Maasai guides lead game drives in open vehicles built for the terrain, tracking lion, leopard, elephant and the Mara's resident giraffe and cheetah. Horse safaris and hot air balloon flights run as alternatives to the standard drive, and guided walks and village visits fill the hours between. Meals are taken communally, with bush breakfasts and sundowners arranged out in the reserve when weather allows. The camp runs on solar power and keeps a generator for backup, a nod to its position well away from any grid. A pool sits near the lounge and bar for the heat of the day. Check-in runs from noon, check-out by nine the following morning. Wi-fi reaches the rooms, though the draw here is what happens outside them.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/6776/2747/files/314451_2F1744615073540_TAM_4447-HDR.jpg?v=1786526658
