There is no road in. Guests reach it by traditional long-tailed boat, an hour's ride across Lake Muda and up the Muda River from the jetty. The forest around the lodge holds nearly nine saltlicks, mineral-rich clearings where elephants, gaur, deer and tapir come to feed, making them reliable places to watch wildlife from a discreet distance. Hornbills move overhead in numbers rare anywhere else in the country; all ten of Malaysia's hornbill species are recorded here.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe lodge itself keeps to 14 rooms, most built for two, four larger ones sleeping up to six dormitory-style. Each has an attached bathroom and a balcony that faces straight into the forest canopy. Power comes from a small generator and a growing solar system; river water is piped in for washing, with filtered water kept for drinking at the Makan Place, the open dining hall that doubles as the lodge's meeting point. Meals are cooked by the same guides and boatmen who lead the day's outings. Evenings bring gibbon calls across the water and, on the river cruise, the chance of otters or fresh elephant tracks on the bank.
