Gorongosa Safaris - Chicari Camp
Tucked deep within over a million acres of protected wilderness, Chicari Camp is one of just two safari camps in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park – a place celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity and extraordinary conservation story. This newly built, high-spec yet low-impact seasonal camp offers exclusive access to one of Africa’s last truly wild spaces, inviting guests to slow down, tune into nature’s rhythms, and experience Gorongosa like few ever will.
Formerly known as Gorongosa Wild Camp, Chicari is named after the traditional clay drinking pot, a fitting tribute to the year-round pan it overlooks – a vital waterhole that draws a steady stream of wildlife. Surrounded by fever trees and rich woodlands, the camp blends seamlessly into its surroundings, offering both immersion and comfort.
The camp features eight en-suite safari tents and two unique Treehide Tents perched at the base of a wooden treehouse structure. These two tents share an expansive outdoor deck which are ideal for families or two couples travelling together. Each tent has a private deck with uninterrupted views of the pan, offering front-row seats to watch elephants bathe, antelope graze, and birds dance across the water.
Days at Chicari are filled with exploration – guided walks right from camp and game drives led by expert local guides. These activities reveal Gorongosa’s diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife, from lions and wild dogs to tiny endemic species found nowhere else on earth. Evenings revolve around the campfire and the main tented dining area, where Head Chef Eddy and his team serve fresh, wholesome meals, including homemade high tea treats and flavour-packed dinners.
With a relaxed bar, central firepit, and open communal areas, guests are free to move between spaces and savour the camp experience at their own pace. As darkness falls and the bush comes alive with sound, Chicari becomes more than just a camp – it’s a sanctuary for those seeking authenticity, adventure, and connection in one of Africa’s most compelling parks.
