guesthouse-gimbur-skagafjrdur-iceland
Guesthouse Gimbur

Guesthouse Gimbur is a family-run house on Iceland's north coast, opened by Jón and Sjöfn on April 1, 2015, after the couple had spent parts of four decades at this site called Reykjarhóll, or "smoke hill," for the steam once mistaken for smoke rising from its hot spring. That same spring still heats the building and supplies hot water year-round. The house holds seven bedrooms and sleeps up to 18 guests. Two bedrooms have their own entrance and en-suite bathroom; five more sit within the main house, sharing two bathrooms, two showers, and a tub. A large kitchen and a dining and sitting room occupy the second floor, and a hot tub sits out on the terrace.

Set on road 76, 23km north of Hofsós, the guesthouse faces the Arctic Ocean directly. Midnight sun fills the summer months; in winter, with no light pollution nearby, the aurora borealis appears overhead. The owners, trained in social sciences and visual arts, describe their approach as slow tourism and grow their own vegetables and herbs in summer. Guests hike the surrounding hills and coastline, watch birds along the shore, and ride horses at a neighbouring farm. Siglufjörður's Herring Era Museum lies a 30-minute drive away, and Hofsós's swimming pool is 15 minutes off.
