Guests can also take a floatplane from the private jetty over the geothermal terrain the region is known for, steam and mud pools included. Back at the lodge, a lakeside hot tub and sauna sit open to the air, useful after a day spent walking the redwoods or visiting a Māori cultural site nearby. Breakfast is cooked and served overlooking the water. The lodge takes its name from the koura, a small freshwater crayfish native to New Zealand, visible at night along the lake's edge under torchlight. It is a five-minute drive to central Rotorua, and closer still to several of the area's better-known attractions.
