Redheads, pintails and teal work the shallows; white-winged and mourning doves cross the fields at dawn and dusk. The lodge itself holds 15 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and space for up to three guests. Meals come family-style, three times a day, from a kitchen running on local ingredients. Guides work the blinds in small groups, two or three hunters each, and pointing dogs cover the quail ground behind them. It is a working landscape shaped around the birds' calendar: ducks from November to February, dove from mid-August through October, quail across the cooler months. Between hunts, the pace drops. There is a pool with a swim-up bar, a jacuzzi, and a covered lounge that looks out over green grounds. Transfers run by road from Brownsville, McAllen or Harlingen, a crossing of under two hours.
