The reserve below is Manyoni Private Game Reserve, a Big Five concession in Kwazulu Natal where rangers track rhino and lead guests through riverine forest thick with birdlife. Nine suites make up the lodge, each with its own plunge pool and a hammock strung where the cliff drops toward the river. It is a family-run operation, solar-powered throughout, with a wine cellar that has picked up its own share of awards. Mornings start with coffee and rusks before an early game drive; guests return to breakfast in the dining room, then can spend the rest of the morning at the pool or on the verandah. Evening drives run into sunset, with stops for sundowners at points chosen for the view. Meals are taken variously in the dining room, on the main deck, or outdoors, with bread and pastries baked on site. A spa on the property draws on local plant knowledge for its treatments, set against the same bushveld views as the suites. Check-in runs from 2pm, checkout from 10am.
