{"product_id":"lion-camp","title":"Lion Camp","description":"\u003cp\u003eFounded in the late 1960s by Norman Carr as a base for walking safaris and anti-poaching scouts, the site held three round rondavels and became South Luangwa's first permanent camp. By 2004 it had passed into private hands and become a structured lodge, and a 2017 rebuild added raised wooden walkways linking the suites to the main area. That history is still visible: the restored rondavels now hold a shop, wildlife library, small gym and photographic studio. Today ten thatch-and-canvas suites stand on stilts above an oxbow lagoon, each with a private deck facing the plain. Seven are Luxury Suites; three Deluxe Suites add an outdoor bathtub. Two linked suites form a Family Suite with a shared lounge. The lodge sits in the park's northern reaches, well beyond the Mfuwe gate, near one of the few water sources left in the dry season. It is a compact stay. Guides lead two game drives a day, capped at four guests per vehicle, plus walking safaris with an armed scout. Wildlife wanders through camp unfenced, including a resident bull elephant known to staff as Charlie. Dinner runs three courses, paired with South African wines, most produce sourced from farmers in nearby Mfuwe since planting inside the park is banned.
