There are no fences around the camp itself either. Elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard move through the grounds on their own terms, drawn by a stream fed waterhole that sits close to the main lounge and viewing deck. The lodge itself is small: five suites, built of stone and thatch, reached by paths that wind through the bush rather than a formal drive. Four have private plunge pools; each has its own deck facing the gorge that gives the lodge its name. Rooms mix cool linens with African fabrics, and most keep a Victorian bathtub alongside an outdoor shower. The main lodge looks out from teak decks across a valley cut by Makweti Gorge, with a waterfall on its western side and hills running on toward the horizon. Two guided activities run each day, game drives in open vehicles capped at six guests, alongside walks on foot with a ranger for tracks, calls and the smaller life the vehicles miss. Meals draw on membership of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, served indoors or under the open sky.
