malamala-camp
MalaMala Camp

MalaMala is a large private Big Five reserve — thirteen thousand three hundred hectares of riverine bush in Sabie Park, Mpumalanga, pressed between Kruger National Park to the east and the Sabi Sand Reserve to the west. Nineteen kilometres of its boundary with Kruger are unfenced, so lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino move freely across it.

The reserve runs three camps. MalaMala Camp and Sable Camp both sit on the Sand River; units are ochre-coloured and set back under large trees, with verandahs and decks facing the water and the game that comes to drink. Sable Camp occupies the southern section of the reserve. Rooms across the three camps number nineteen in total — luxury rooms, luxury suites, and Sable Camp suites — each with air conditioning, a mini-bar, and an outside shower.

Game drives run twice daily in open four-wheel-drive vehicles, morning and late afternoon. Rangers carry radios and share sightings across the reserve so that vehicles can reach the same animals. You can also walk the reserve on foot with an armed ranger, reading tracks and learning the ground-level detail that a vehicle cannot offer.

Dinners rotate between the deck overlooking the Sand River, an indoor dining room, and a reed boma around a fire. The reserve is community co-owned with the neighbouring Shangaan community and has operated as a conservation concession since 1927.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/6776/2747/files/14883mcpool3jpg_dee139d3-4e9c-4fa7-976d-18a2c97d5244.webp?v=1784333514
