nyamoumba-river-lodge
Nyamoumba River Lodge

Mornings here start on the water. Guests board a pontoon boat for a game-viewing cruise along the Zambezi, then return for the slower business of watching a resident pod of hippos work the shallows below the lodge. Nyamoumba River Lodge sits on the banks of the river, 27 kilometres from the Kariba Dam Wall, at the point where the Zambezi widens into the Kariba Gorge floodplain. It has just four rooms, twin or double, each with mosquito nets, an overhead fan, a verandah, and an en-suite shower. Standard rooms are set back slightly from the water under a tree line, so the view comes filtered through branches rather than head-on. The main building holds an open kitchen, a lounge, and a dining room, and outside a lawn runs down to a bar area, a firepit, and a swimming pool, all facing the river. Anglers go out after tiger fish on a catch-and-release basis, a species the Zambezi is known for among freshwater anglers. Birdwatchers work the gorge, the nearby islands, and the escarpment springs, where the habitat shifts from riverine woodland to open water within a short walk. There is no set programme beyond the boats and the birds. Laundry and airport transfers are complimentary, and a guided walk can be arranged for those who want to leave the riverbank behind for an hour.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0582/6776/2747/files/295669_2F1732111923083_WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-20-at-16.07.39_635bceed.jpg?v=1786526680
