The family, Jairo de Moura and Ivone Copetti among them, stayed on as caretakers of the delta rather than farmers of it. Their old farmhouse now holds eight rooms, each with a private bathroom, air conditioning, ceiling fan and king bed, set on an island between two arms of the Salobra River. The water here runs clear over limestone, and fishing is banned by state law, so the only sound on the decks is birdsong. Guided outings stay small, six guests to a group, by boat, jeep, horseback, canoe or on foot, timed to the cooler hours when animals move most. Caiman gather in the bays around the lodge; capuchin and howler monkeys work the riverside forest; giant otters and, in the dry months, jaguar turn up along the water. The lodge sits 11 km down a good gravel road off the BR-262, midway between Campo Grande and Corumbá and the closest such stay to Bonito. Meals draw on Pantaneira beef and vegetables grown on site or bought from producers in Miranda.
