He kept the island small on purpose. Fourteen villas sit spaced along the shore, screened from one another by planting, so no couple sees another's terrace. The island runs to 500 acres, with 12 private beaches around a lagoon that turns from turquoise to deep blue depending on the light. Each villa has its own attendant, called a Bure Mama, who unpacks bags, arranges picnics and joins guests around the kava bowl at night. Furnishings are made from driftwood and island timber, ceilings woven from palm and bound with coconut-husk cord. Meals draw on tuna, crab and lobster brought in daily by fishermen from nearby villages, alongside fruit and vegetables grown on the property. Guests can claim an entire beach for the day, snorkel the reef, or take a horse out along 13 kilometres of trails. Solar power runs the resort. It is adults-only for most of the year, with family periods set aside on the calendar. A herpetologist who later studied the film's footage identified a species of iguana on camera that science had not yet recorded.
