Fes is Morocco's oldest imperial city, founded in 789 AD and built around Fes el-Bali, the world's largest contiguous car-free urban district. Where Marrakech has grown into an internationalized resort hub, Fes retains a medieval working core: guilds still tan leather, chisel metal, and carve cedar by hand in the same quarters they've occupied for centuries. It sits inland on the Saïss plain, anchored by the 9th-century Al Quaraouiyine University, and functions as a cultural counterweight to Meknes and Rabat rather than a beach or coastal alternative. Access runs through Fes-Saïss Airport, 13km from the medina, with direct links to Paris, London, and other European cities alongside domestic connections.

The tradeoff is climate and terrain. Summer highs regularly exceed 40°C, and the narrow stone alleys of the medina trap and radiate heat, making midday sightseeing impractical without early starts or pool access. Winter brings cold, damp nights that unheated historic riads handle poorly, so properties need working fireplaces or underfloor heating. Spring and autumn carry the best walking conditions and the heaviest demand. Most itineraries use Fes as a 2 to 3 night cultural anchor, linking northern circuits through Chefchaouen and Rabat with the desert corridor toward Merzouga and Marrakech. Self-driving inside the medina is not possible; licensed guides are required for its pedestrian core.
