Hassilabied, at a glance

Hassilabied is a small Saharan oasis village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, Morocco's largest dune field, in the Errachidia Province of the southeast. It sits four kilometres from Merzouga, the region's better-known desert gateway, but trades Merzouga's higher-volume staging-post character for a quieter footprint of mud-brick architecture and a working palmeraie, Hassilabied Gardens, irrigated by traditional underground khettara channels. Where Merzouga functions as the main hub for regional desert transport, Hassilabied offers direct foot access to the high dunes alongside an actual agricultural community, making it the more boutique base for the same landscape.

Access runs through Errachidia Airport, 120 to 125 kilometres north, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive on the N13; overland transfers from Marrakech or Fes across the Atlas take 7 to 10 hours by car. Peak conditions fall in spring and autumn, with warm days and cool nights suited to camel trekking and desert camping; summer brings daytime highs above 40°C and restricts outdoor activity, and some luxury camps close from late June to mid-August. Winter nights can drop near freezing in open dune valleys. Hassilabied typically anchors one to two nights within a longer southern Morocco circuit.
