The Masai Mara National Reserve is a 1,510-square-kilometer protected sanctuary in Narok County, southwestern Kenya, forming the northern tip of the wider Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. It sits unfenced against Tanzania's Serengeti National Park, allowing the seasonal passage of over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra between the two. Unlike Kenya's national-park system run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Mara is administered by the Narok County Government, with its western Mara Triangle sector held separately under the nonprofit Mara Conservancy. Access is by 45-to-60-minute light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to one of five local airstrips, or by a 5-to-7-hour road transfer that turns to unpaved, corrugated track once you leave the Sekenani corridor.

Wildlife density stays high year-round, but conditions shift sharply by season. The long rains fall April to May, the short rains in November; river crossings cluster August to September during the July-to-October migration window, when lodge demand requires booking six to twelve months out. Park entry runs $100 per adult daily in low season, doubling to $200 in peak season, and tickets for guests based outside the reserve expire after 12 hours, with a same-day departure cutoff of 10:00 AM. Within the reserve, itineraries typically run 3 to 4 nights, often paired with Amboseli, the Rift Valley lakes, or a coastal extension to Diani or Malindi.
