Simbavati Fynbos on Sea

Light shifts across the Indian Ocean from rooms set high on the dunes above Sedgefield. Simbavati Fynbos on Sea occupies a headland on the Garden Route, within a 600-hectare fynbos reserve that stretches from ridge to shore. Nine rooms and a private cottage overlook the ocean, the Outeniqua Mountains to the north, or the reserve itself. Three classic suites have king beds convertible to twins, en-suite showers, and French doors opening to small garden seating areas. Six luxury and superior suites offer king or twin beds, private terraces, and views across fynbos to the sea; superior units add double vanities and indoor-outdoor showers. A two-bedroom superior suite spans two levels with a loft, sitting area, and deck. The cottage stands apart from the main lodge with two en-suite bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen and dining area, wraparound deck, and private splash pool facing the ocean. Eland, zebra, bushbuck, and waterbuck move through the reserve.

Guided and self-guided walks cross the fynbos; four-by-four drives run at sunrise or dusk. A pool and spa sit within the lodge grounds. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding take place on the Swartvlei Lagoon below the property. Tandem paragliding launches from Gericke's Point, six kilometres south. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking the coast. George Airport lies 45 minutes by road.
