8 on Oregon
Set high on the slope of Conical Hill, 8 on Oregon looks down over Hanmer Springs to the farmland and mountains beyond. It is a small lodge, just three guest rooms, each with its own balcony and a view that runs past the rooftops to the ranges. A private gate at the back of the property opens onto the heritage walking trails and lookout above the village, so guests can climb through the woodland behind the lodge before the village even wakes. Each room has an ensuite bathroom, air conditioning, heating, and a small seating area, along with tea, coffee and Wi-Fi as standard. The guest lounge is the social heart of the place: a library, a large screen for sport or a film, and the same wide view over the plains from the sofa. Breakfast is included and can be taken on a private deck. Mornings often carry birdsong from the woodland rather than street noise. The village itself, with its cafés, restaurants and thermal pools, is a short walk downhill, or a minute's drive if the climb back up doesn't appeal. Parking is on site. Check-in runs from 3pm, checkout at 10am, among the latest in Hanmer Springs. The lodge does not take children under sixteen, which keeps the terrace and lounge quiet.
