Agua Morada

Built as a colonial house set into forest outside Acaxochitlán, Agua Morada has grown into a small hotel without losing the timber and stone bones of that original structure. A stream runs past the property, audible from several rooms at first light. Guests choose among four room types: cabins raised among the trees for up to four people, two suites with king beds and soaking tubs, a master suite with a hydromassage bath and private terrace, and Casa Calix, a three-bedroom cottage with its own fireplace and dining room for ten. A camping area adds tents and shared showers for those who want the forest with less roof overhead. The restaurant serves homemade dishes daily from breakfast through evening, open to non-guests as well, and the whole property is pet-friendly under a short list of house rules covering leashes and shared space with the resident ducks, chickens and a donkey. Outdoor life centres on a hammock area, a small lake with loungers and a private hiking trail through the woods. Extras run to massage treatments, bonfires by reservation and guided trips into Acaxochitlán, a town classified in Mexico as a Pueblo Mágico. Check-in runs from 3pm.
