Set in a secluded corner of Amakhala Game Reserve, HillsNek Safari Camp occupies 18,000 acres of malaria-free wilderness in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The reserve lies 70 kilometres north-east of Port Elizabeth's airport, a one-hour drive. The Bushman's River winds through the reserve, supplying water to over 60 mammal species including lion, elephant, buffalo, white rhino, and cheetah. Plains herds of zebra, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, oryx, and eland graze across terrain that spans five of South Africa's seven biomes. The bird list holds more than 250 recorded species.
The camp comprises four canvas tents—three classic and one family—each mounted on a wrap-around wooden deck. Elevated wooden walkways link the tents to the main lodge, a stone, thatch, and canvas structure built around a stone swimming pool. Each tent measures roughly 50 m² and holds a king-size bed beneath mosquito netting, a freestanding bath, dual basins, an indoor shower, and an outdoor shower open to the bush. The family tent adds a second bedroom with two twin beds. Décor follows an earth-tone palette that reflects the surrounding landscape. Tea, coffee, and a stocked minibar sit on each desk.
Twice-daily game drives depart at dawn and late afternoon in open 4×4 vehicles, led by qualified rangers. Night drives use spotlights to track nocturnal animals—aardvark, brown hyena, bushpig, porcupine. Guided Big Five bush walks require a specialist trail guide and last two to three hours; minimum age is 16 years. Birdwatching safaris with a specialist guide can be arranged. The camp welcomes children aged nine and older; younger children may stay if the entire camp is privately booked.
