Aman-i-Khas

Set on scrubby forest at the edge of Ranthambore National Park, Aman-i-Khas keeps to ten tents, each raised on a concrete platform and roofed in high, Mughal-style canvas. The camp sits within reach of the park's core zone, where tigers move through dry teak forest alongside leopards, deer and crocodile-filled waterholes. It opens only from October to May, when the forest thins and game viewing is at its clearest. Each tent runs to a bedroom, a sitting area with twin writing desks, and a bathing space with a freestanding tub and separate shower, lit by natural light through canvas walls. Three further tents are kept for dining, spa treatments and quiet reading, apart from the sleeping quarters. Two guided drives run daily into the park, tracking tiger and leopard on open jeeps with a ranger and tracker aboard. Evenings settle around the outdoor salon, where staff pour drinks as the light drops over the brush. It is a compact stay. Meals draw on home-style Indian cooking, served either in the dining tent or, weather allowing, outdoors under canvas eaves. Beyond the game drives, the camp offers yoga, meditation and spa treatments, giving guests a slower counterpoint to the twice-daily pursuit of wildlife. Air conditioning, heating and chest coolers are fitted throughout, a concession to Rajasthan's wide seasonal swings in temperature. The setting stays plain and unfussy, built around the forest and the animals that move through it rather than around the camp itself.
