Amankora Thimphu

Dark walls and timber panelling define the suites at Amankora Thimphu. Each of the sixteen rooms holds a king bed, a reading chair and a window seat set into a banquette, looking either onto a landscaped courtyard or out to a stream running through pine forest. It is a compact lodge, one of five that make up the Amankora circuit across Bhutan's valleys. Fireplaces warm each room against the mountain evenings, and bathrooms are built for lingering rather than passing through. The spa uses herbs grown locally, worked into treatments after a day spent in the surrounding hills. Downstairs, the restaurant serves Bhutanese, Indian and Western dishes shared across all five lodges, with yak meat and honey sourced from the Bumthang Valley; private dining can be set up inside or out, for two or for a larger group. Thimphu itself sits close by, with its textile and folk heritage museums, and the market at Changlingmethang worth the walk. Further into the valley, a bridge crossing leads toward Cheri Goemba, site of the kingdom's first monastic community. Golf is on offer too: Bhutan's only course, nine holes, lies in the city centre, and tee times can be arranged through the lodge. Guests can also book guided hikes or simply walk the self-guided trails through the pines behind the property.
