Ambassade Hotel

Strung along a quiet stretch of the Herengracht, Ambassade Hotel occupies ten canal houses raised between the 17th and 20th centuries. The buildings are joined but not levelled: small staircases and landings still step between floors where one house meets the next, a reminder that each was built on its own terms. Fifty-six rooms and suites result, no two alike, ranging from Deluxe Classic doubles facing a courtyard to a split-level Superior room reached by a spiral stair. Grand Suites and Canalview rooms look straight onto the water. The hotel began in 1953 with a single address, Herengracht 349, and grew house by house over four decades, gathering a following among writers along the way. Its Library Bar holds more than 5,000 signed books by authors from 76 countries, alongside a guest book of inscriptions from musicians, actors and politicians. CoBrA paintings hang throughout the public rooms, including in Brasserie Ambassade, where the kitchen works a French repertoire from breakfast through dinner. A terrace opens onto the canal in warmer months. The Anne Frank House and the Nine Streets are both a short walk off, and Dam Square is close enough to reach on foot before lunch. Check-in starts at 3pm; a small garage nearby takes cars by arrangement.
