A private vehicle transfers you to and from the walking ground, where a specialist guide leads you through the reserve at a pace set by hoofprints and undergrowth rather than a road. Expect close attention to smaller signs of life alongside the chance of encountering larger animals, with the guide reading tracks, dung and disturbed grass along the way. It runs as a full-day activity at Phinda Zuka Lodge in Zululand, South Africa, and comes at an additional cost to standard game drives and walks included in a stay.
