Arctic River Lodge

Founded on a confluence, Arctic River Lodge stands in Tärendö, a village of about 440 people 80 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, at the point where the Kalix River meets the Tärendö River. Water frames the site on nearly every side. Rooms are simple and comfortable, each with an en-suite bathroom, built for guests passing through after a day on snowmobile or husky trail rather than for lingering indoors. A wilderness camp extends the property for adventure tours further from the main buildings. Meals and drinks are served in a restaurant and bar on site, with food drawn from the region's kitchen rather than flown in. Three saunas and two outdoor jacuzzis give the lodge its evening rhythm; guests move between hot room and cold air, then out to watch the sky. In winter, snowmobiles and huskies work the trails around the village; snowshoes cover the same ground on foot when the pace turns quieter. The lodge keeps no pretension about its setting: two rivers, one small village, and a base built for people who came for the wilderness first and the room second. It reads as a stop on a route rather than a destination that insists on itself, which in this stretch of Norrbotten is exactly the point.
