Aromas dos Salgueiros

Framed by a cork oak old enough to have given one cottage its name, Aromas dos Salgueiros sits on a working farm three kilometres from Castelo de Vide, inside a protected upland park in inland Portugal. A fig tree and an olive tree stand beside the other two houses, close enough that their branches shade the walls. The farm grows its own grapes, olives, lavender and orchard fruit, and turns the surplus into wine, brandy, oil, soap and jam, most of it served or sold on site. Each cottage sleeps up to four, with a king bed, a sofa bed, a kitchenette, and a private bathroom. Cork Oak House sits on one level only, its wide windows opening straight onto the tree it is named for. Olive Tree House has a balcony facing the rooftops of Castelo de Vide, a good spot to watch the light fade over the hills. Fig Tree House is built around a single large stone left in place as a centrepiece. Breakfast draws on the garden: seasonal fruit, yoghurt made on site, bread from a wood oven. Water for the pool runs through a UV-C system rather than chlorine. Guests can walk the surrounding trails, watch birds and wildlife, or join seasonal workshops on the harvest, from grape picking to soap making. It is a quiet, working smallholding, not a resort.
