Auberge de la Baie

Set back from Mont Saint-Michel across open salt marsh, Auberge de la Baie is a stone-built inn on the Route de la Rive at Ardevon, five minutes from the mount by road. Flocks of Pré Salé sheep cross the fields in front of the hotel most mornings and evenings, grazing the marsh grass that gives the local lamb its name. The building keeps a plain, traditional character, run with a family feel rather than any polish. It is a compact stay, with thirty-three rooms across doubles, twins, triples, quadruples and quintuples, sized from 12 to 37 square metres, each with a shower or bathtub. Rooms carry flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi as standard. The restaurant seats guests across three dining rooms with views toward Mont Saint-Michel, and a terrace catches the same outlook when weather allows. Breakfast is served buffet-style, with bread, pastries, cheese, ham, eggs and fruit among the spread; from the restaurant tables, early risers can watch the same sheep heading out to the polders. Check-in runs from 4pm, checkout by 11am. A shuttle stop nearby links the hotel to the historic centre. The hotel takes dogs for a small daily supplement, and an electric charging point sits on site.
