Aurora Lodge

Set on the sandy shore of Ile aux Nattes, a car-free island off Sainte Marie's southern tip, Aurora Lodge faces a lagoon that guests reach on foot, by kayak, or by mask and fins. No roads cross the island, so arrival is by boat from La Pointe, a crossing of 20 to 60 minutes depending on tide and vessel. The lodge runs entirely off-grid, drawing power from its own solar array and water from a well and tower on site, with gas heaters keeping showers hot around the clock. Three bungalow types sit through the property: Modern Comfort rooms with open-air showers, Family Bungalows tucked into a private garden corner, and Classic Island Bungalows near the sand that date to the property's earliest years. A wood-fired pizzeria and a kitchen built on Malagasy spice and produce anchor the food side, with over 30% of the menu vegetarian. Kayaks and snorkelling gear are free to guests, and the reef sits a short paddle from the beach. Excursions run further afield to Ilot Sable's sand islets and the whale-watching grounds offshore between June and September. Reception opens from 8am to 6pm daily. It is a quiet stretch of coast, reached slowly and kept running on sun and rain.
