Aurora Village Ivalo

Built into the forest above the Arctic Circle, Aurora Village consists of glass-roof cabins designed around a single fact of geography: this stretch of Finnish Lapland sees the aurora borealis from late August to mid-April. Each 28 m² Aurora Cabin sleeps two, with a laser-heated glass roof over the bed, climate control and free Wi-Fi. The Aurora Suite runs to two bedrooms and sleeps up to six, with a fireplace and its own fridge. The Aurora Tower stacks its loft bedroom over a kitchenette across two floors. It is a compact village, not a resort. An automated sky camera issues aurora alerts around the clock, so guests can wait indoors until the display starts. Activities begin at the door: snowmobile safaris, husky and reindeer sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, ice karting and a floating sauna among them. In autumn, before the lakes freeze, the northern lights show as reflections on open water, a window that closes once the ice sets in. Ivalo Airport lies a 15-minute drive away; there is no rail link, with the nearest station 300 km south in Rovaniemi. Thermal clothing is issued to every guest on arrival, boots and balaclava included, built for a climate where the cold is the main event.
