Aurum Lodge is a small off-grid lodge on Highway 11 at Cline River, near Nordegg, Alberta, set back from the shore of Abraham Lake. The nearest airports, Calgary and Edmonton, are roughly 350 km away. Lake Louise is 1.5 hours by road; Banff, two hours; Jasper and Canmore, two and a half. The lake itself is a reservoir, formed in 1972 behind the Bighorn Dam, known locally for the methane bubbles that freeze into the ice from mid-December through February.
The lodge holds five private rooms across two upper floors reached without an elevator, plus a two-bedroom suite of roughly 850 sq ft and a studio of about 440 sq ft, both self-contained and pet-friendly. Rooms are furnished simply, with king or twin beds, ensuite showers and free Wi-Fi, but no air conditioning. There is no cell signal at the property. The Golden Peaks Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with wine and cocktails available on the terrace. Guests fish, hike, snowshoe, canyon and ride horseback nearby, and can arrange helicopter tours or climbing trips a short drive away. A fire pit and deck look out over the water. Bears pass through from late April to October, mostly in May and June; bear spray is kept at reception.
