Awon Hotel

Built around a hanok moved from its original site and rebuilt on this Wanju plot, Awon combines an old wooden house with a plain concrete gallery wing. Five buildings hold seven rooms in total, split between three hanok stays and one modern annexe finished in bare concrete. The wooden house keeps its original timber frame, its deep eaves, and its raised floor, and its detail carries through to the beam lines under the roof. The annexe reads differently: minimal, poured concrete, glass, built to sit against the older timber without competing with it. Bamboo grows along a path near the buildings, and the wind through it carries into the rooms. You can walk the grounds and reach a museum wing showing changing exhibitions, alongside a music room and a dining room used for breakfast service. It is a compact stay. Nearby sights include a gallery in a former building and two temple sites reachable by road. Smoking and cooking are not permitted inside the wooden buildings, given their timber construction, and children under eight are not accepted as guests. Breakfast is included for all overnight guests. The result sits between a small museum and a house to stay in, built from an old structure and a new one placed side by side on the same ground.
