Barahi Kathmandu
Set where Thamel's narrow lanes give way to wider streets, Hotel Barahi Kathmandu keeps its rooms plain and functional: air conditioning, television, Wi-Fi, private bathrooms. It is not a large hotel, and it does not try to be. The location does the work. Thamel's shops and cafes sit within walking distance, and the old quarters of Kathmandu, with their temples and markets, are close enough to reach on foot or by a short taxi ride. A swimming pool and bar give guests somewhere to land after a day spent in the city's noise and traffic, and the on-site restaurant covers meals without requiring a trip back out into the street. Room service is available, as is parking, useful given how tight Kathmandu's central roads can get. The hotel belongs to the Barahi group, which also runs properties in Pokhara and Chitwan, so a stay here can sit at the front or back end of a longer Nepal itinerary. Check-in guests will find the pace calmer than Thamel's main strip, a few minutes' walk away. For a short stay in the capital, before or after time in the mountains or the lowlands, it offers a straightforward, central base with the basics done properly.
