Bayano Ecolodge

Lake Bayano gives the ecolodge its address and its arrival ritual. Guests reach the property only by boat, leaving from a mainland meeting point and crossing open water before the shoreline comes into view. The lake is bordered by rainforest, and the lodge sits directly on its edge, close to the Rio Tigre and Rio Maje. Rooms range from tipis for two to a two-storey open cabin sleeping six, with names that describe their outlook: Lake View, River View, Little Cabin. Each stay includes breakfast, and a floating hammock, communal deck, bonfire area and an inflatable hot tub sit along the water's edge for guests to share. Kayaks are available on the lake itself, though not permitted on the Rio Tigre. Solar power runs the property, so there is no air conditioning and no wifi, only fans for the night and mosquito nets over every bed. At night you can hear or see caiman eyes along the shore, spotted by lantern from the water. Guided trips reach the Bayano caves and the Emberá community, whose members visit on weekends to sell crafts and offer traditional dress. It is a compact, boat-in stay, built around the lake rather than around it.
