B & B at The Augustine is a schist-stone house in Saint-Jean Baptiste, a lived-in district just outside Old Quebec's walls. Built around 1790 from local sedimentary stone, the building once housed the early work of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, who opened a refuge for women here in 1850. Red pine floors and woodwork remain from that period, restored since 1996 alongside modern plumbing and wiring. The Château Frontenac stands 900 metres off; Gare du Palais is 700 metres away. Rue Saint-Jean, with its shops, bars and restaurants, is under two minutes on foot.
Rooms are individually decorated, some with private bathrooms and others sharing a bathroom between two rooms only. The Garden Suite has its own entrance, a fireplace insert, a kitchenette and a work table. A private floor sleeps up to four across two bedrooms with a shared bathroom and lounge. Each floor of the house has its own sitting room with cable television and games. Breakfast is cooked on site and served between 8am and 10am, with a menu that changes daily — pancakes, poached egg with smoked salmon, and mille-trous, a Moroccan specialty. It is served at a shared table. Guests often trade notes with travellers from elsewhere over coffee. Free wifi reaches the garden and terrace. Parking on nearby streets is free overnight and on weekends; a small private lot costs extra.
