Björkhaga Hotell & Konferens

Grown up alongside Mullsjö's outdoor-recreation identity, Björkhaga Hotell & Konferens sits inside a Swedish municipality once nicknamed the Kingdom of the Outdoors. Rooms come with television, Wi-Fi and a minibar. It is a straightforward, comfortable base rather than a destination in itself. Inside, guests have an indoor pool, a sauna and two hot tubs; the relaxation area is included with most stay packages. Outside, the terrain does the talking: cross-country and downhill skiing in winter, hiking, cycling, canoeing, fishing and golf in summer. Mullsjö Ski Center, a short drive off, runs seven slopes and produces its own snow with 60 cannons. Ryfors Golf Course, built more than 130 years ago by the Sager brothers, claims to be Scandinavia's first, and its 18 holes mix parkland, woodland and water. You can hire a bike at the hotel and follow marked loops straight from the door, including a red and blue trail network that starts on-site. Dinner runs to three or five courses depending on the package booked, with a breakfast buffet included each morning. It is a compact operation, built for weekends rather than transit stops, and it leans on the lakes, forests and ski runs around it more than on any design statement of its own.
