Black Rock Lodge

Reached by a rough road above the Macal River, Black Rock Lodge sits on the western edge of Belize, backed by the Mountain Pine Ridge and facing the Don Elijio Panti National Park across the water. The river does most of the talking here. Guests tube down it from a mile upstream, riding cascades and pools back toward the lodge, with the option to go over Black Rock Waterfall itself before drifting in on the current with a rum punch in hand. Trails from the lodge climb through rainforest to Flour Camp Cave, Keyhole Cave, and a summit lookout over the valley; a half-day hike across the river into Don Elijio Panti park passes plants once used by the healer the park is named for. The lodge runs entirely off solar and hydro power, with its own systems for water and waste. Its restaurant draws produce from an on-site farm, cooked into meals built around the season. Cabins range from simple riverview rooms to the Bird's Nest, each with its own bathroom, wifi, and cooling. Guides lead canoe trips, night walks for tarantulas and red-eyed tree frogs, and birding along the river corridor. It is a working jungle base, not a resort with a jungle view.
