Bodelssons by the Sea

Guests arrive by bike or car to a cluster of red timber buildings near Tosteberga, a fishing village on Sweden's Hanöbukten coast with roots in the 1600s. The sea and its salt meadows sit close enough to smell from the terrace. It is an adults-only hotel, with a minimum age of twelve, and holds only eight rooms, each with its own entrance from the garden and a private terrace or balcony facing the water. Two superior rooms on the upper floor run to 30 m², with balconies looking straight over the bay; a detached garden cottage, sinnesro, has its own sun deck and a bathroom smaller than most, at under 2 m². Guests swim in the outdoor pool through summer and soak year-round in one of two hot tubs, each large enough for eight people and heated to close to 40°C. Bicycles are free to borrow, and a quarter-hour ride reaches Trolle Ljungby's manor grounds. The restaurant's kitchen draws most of its meat from wild game shot on that same estate, five kilometres off, and serves it alongside organic produce grown in a herb garden just outside the rooms. Breakfast is taken on the terrace, sea in view. Bath linen throughout is organic cotton, and the pool runs from mid-May to September.
