Bovey Castle is a country hotel built into 275 acres of Dartmoor National Park, first opened in 1930 as a hotel and golf resort by the Great Western Railway. The main house keeps its original scale: stone walls, high ceilings and grounds that roll out toward open moorland. An 18-hole golf course laid out at the same period still runs across the estate, and the Elan Spa now occupies part of the grounds once given over to leisure for rail-age guests. Two restaurants operate on site. Smith's Brasserie serves seasonal dishes with valley views, while the Great Western Grill works with local and regional produce for a more formal menu.
Rooms sit within the castle itself; beyond it, granite lodges are set among the woodland and moor. The Classic Dartmoor Lodges have three bedrooms each, arranged over three floors, with their own kitchens and private terraces looking out over grounds or moorland. Guests at the lodges can still use the pool, gym and tennis courts up at the main house. Falconry, archery and clay pigeon shooting all run from the estate. It is dog-friendly throughout, with cages and bedding available for lodge stays. Housekeeping calls at the lodges every third night.
