Canal House Amsterdam

Arriving at Keizersgracht 148, guests step off one of Amsterdam's grand canals into a converted townhouse holding just 23 rooms. No two are alike. Room categories run from Good, at 17 m², up to the Best Room, a top-floor suite of 60 m² divided by voile curtains and mosaic tile, with a two-person rainforest shower and a tub built for two. Outstanding Rooms carry Marcel Wanders artwork, each paired with a White or Dark Queen chair, and open onto canal views through high ceilings. Better Rooms borrow daylight from a lightwell hung with rotating art. Bathrooms throughout run to deep Philippe Starck tubs, several open-plan, some closed. Every room carries Green & Spring bath products, a stocked minibar and a Bose docking station. A private garden gives guests somewhere to sit in the sun before the canal-side streets fill with evening trade, and a small bar downstairs does the same job after dark. Breakfast is included and served each morning. The address itself does the rest of the work: independent boutiques and restaurants line the Keizersgracht outside, and the hotel is close enough to Amsterdam's centre to reach most of it on foot. It is a compact stay, built around variety of room rather than scale.
