Canopy Lodge

Built inside the caldera of a long-extinct volcano, Canopy Lodge occupies a cloud forest basin above El Valle de Antón, two hours from Panama City. The Guayabo River runs through the grounds, feeding natural swimming pools a short walk from the veranda. Jagged, forest-covered peaks ring the property and hold in a climate that stays spring-like year-round. Twelve rooms sit across two buildings: six doubles and two corner suites in the main lodge, four singles next door, each with a balcony or window wall looking onto the gardens and stream. Fruit feeders in the garden draw close to 94 recorded bird species, among them the Collared Aracari and Crimson-backed Tanager. Agoutis and red-tailed squirrels move through by day; porcupines and woolly opossums appear after dark. A guide leads morning walks along the river past a waterfall and up into the cloud forest, where the tree line opens onto a view of the valley floor. The lodge's library floor is laid in salvaged sapodilla wood from old railway ties, one of several reused materials across the Canopy Family's lodges. Meals are taken on an open-air veranda facing the bird feeders. It is a modest, working stay, built for early starts and long walks, not for lingering indoors.
